Hi Len,
Laughing Well I don't really know what a prison looks like except from shows on TV and they are usually dark concrete or stone scary places.
Matraville was sunny and warm and sheltered from the wind though it could blow through the middle part where Allan is .You didn't get your shoes dirty when it rained either, though we did have some real earth out the back. I have to say though that when I first arrived there, it was different, to say the least. Confused There were no British, everyone was European and all the staff were lovely One girl from their became one of Australia's finest models. She was a child when we were there and used to bring up hurt sparrows as I did wasn't always successful but was at times. Her Dad was on the staff there

As I wrote somewhere else, here: On the National Archive website, it explains that we migrants spent time there.
My visit to this forum reminds me very much of what a fellow ex-Dutch, ex-MBHS school-friend, ex-Matraville Hostel resident spoke to me about, last year.
As a young girl, in that situation, she'd had more worries than I had had.
I am an only child (Now 65). I'd been rather sheltered and was no doubt one of teacher's pets, - in a way - at the primary school in Gouda.
Once we joined our friends, in Matraville Hostel, I innocently warned my little friend's mother, that she was using bad language(s). (She was 6 and learning swear words, in a number of languages, including, our Dutch.)

( Me and her, in the park, close to the tram-line, near Matraville Hostel.)
