Just wondering about the photo with the brick building in the background, a bit flash for the hostel.

I'd forgotten about those sun hats too, I think we all bought one, not sure where though, I'm thinking it was a market place in Aden.

Trust me it is the hostel. I was there when it was built.My late husband was the manager in charge. Have you read the clipping about the hostel 1970 in the Sun newspaper it is in the East Hills forum. Has a picture of my husband too

Thanks for bringing my attention to the newpaper article, I thought I had exhausted every post when I first found this site, but I did not see that one.
What a contrast, I think that maybe if we were greeted with accomodation like that on arrival then many who returned to UK when their two years were up might have stayed here. I know at the age of 15 I thought my life was over when we were taken to a tin hut at East Hills. But I got over it.
I must say though, during my stay at Dundas I didn't see any vandalising, we took the tape recorder into the wash sheds and played music, vandalism just didn't occur to us.

Arrived Sydney aboard SS Australis, Docked @ Woolloomooloo, Longest and Hottest day of the year.

Train...old red rattler to East Hills station, walked from station to Hostel and ushered into our accommodation - "A TIN HUT" WTF....

First night: unbearable humidity and heat, constantly looking for spiders and snakes on the floor of the hut. The people at Australia House had shown us footage of wildlife in Australia.

40 years on and never been back to old country (UK)

We arrived on the Fairsky, docked at Piermont and taken by bus to East Hills, the longest bus ride I had ever been on. I can't imagine what it would have been like to have to walk from the train station to the camp in the heat with suitcases and young children only to find a tin hut at the end of the trail. Still, they do say these experiences are character building.
I've been back just twice in 44 years.

Just wanted to say that those brick buildings were used by the Army Reserves and Kosovars during the 2000 Olympics.
My nephew was in the army reserves (checked under the stadium seats for bombs etc. at the Olympic venues), and was stationed there during that time.

It was good to see a photo of hut 13. I remember when we moved to East Hills in 1970 we lived in hut 13A for a few months before we moved to one of the brick units.

I wish we had some photo's of the place...I was just 9 at the time and don't remember too much about the place.

picard69 did you live in number 13a around august 1969
that is when i came to east hills.
i seem to have faint memory of a boy with red hair
my memory is a bit faint but remember that i lived in the low numbers
and i am sure it was besides the place where you could wash your close
i was 12 years old and i had almost white hair i have a picture of my famely outside of the hut..
if it helps your memory i had a older sister(15) who had a pair of glasses
that was Black. i also had a little sister 7 years old..
