I've been asked to give a talk on the Hostel at the next Lions' Club meeting in Altona. They contacted me after seeing the article in the local paper back in April. I'm sure a lot of the old-timers would have had migrant neighbours if they were not migrants themselves. BTW a certain new Prime Minister was a ten-pound tourist who arrived in 1966, and lives two streets from where I grew up in Altona- I know her neighbours on both sides.
If anyone feels like coming along, it's on Wednesday evening, July 28 @ the Altona RSL, not sure what time as yet. |

Hi Judith, I certainly would be interested. I'm pretty sure I know a couple of the members of Altona Lions Club, so count me in. The time will probably be 6:30 for a 7:00 pm start. I might also see if any other of my club members want to come along to make it an official visit. See you there. I'll let their president know that I at least will be coming. _________________ Resident of Altona Hostel, 1963-1965 |

Judith did very well when she spoke to the Lions of Altona. I've had some feedback saying they enjoyed her talk, and there was one lion who herself had lived on Nunawading migrant hostel in the late 40's and she wants to have a look at this forum.
I also enjoyed meeting Judith's husband Bruce and again her daughter Angela.
A good night was had by all. _________________ Resident of Altona Hostel, 1963-1965 |

Thanks Susan, yes it was a great night and put us on the map somewhat. Everyone was so welcoming. There was a former teacher who taught at Seaholme Primary in 1964-65 and would love to contact some of the hostel kids from that era. (Mr.Buckingham). he especially remembers how well they could sing Beatles' songs.
I found some old class photos on the Altona High School site....there were a few names we knew- Rhona Heaney ,Linda Eaton, Sophia Slee and Ailsa Kay. |
