Hi all you Bob's, Yes Bob(Taylor) the scene did change into the seventies and and yes, drugs became a real problem,in Australia, particularly with the advent of Air Transportation for migrants. It appears that the serious market for hard core drugs was created by the Vietnam conflict and the influx of personell on R and R into Australia. The Vietnam thing was a different war to the others before it and obviously created a need in it's participants for serious relief, hence the drugs. On a lighter note, before all of that, the Poms enjoyed a somewhat bemused approach from Australian Customs and became looked upon as a low risk, (25%) for dutiable goods or prohibited imports, perhaps more so a quarantine risk, farm soil on shoes and gardening tools etc. Other than that they didn't seem to have much more than plastic cameras over the shoulder and mickey mouse watches. I worked at Port Melbourne's Station Pier many times and saw them all, the Fairsky, Fairsea, Fairstar, Ellenis, Patris. Australis, Marconi, Gallileo, Canberra. I saw on the faces of them all, the same wondering hope and sometimes, sadness (leaving their luxurious home of the past five weeks) but enjoyed every moment of my work with them. David

I remember as a 11/12 year old in around 1960/61 at Sydney at the harbor and out on the Ferry to Manly spotting the Migrant ships coming in, especially the Greek liners chocker with people hanging over the rails waving and cheering as they came in to dock. Wonder where they are today, don't seem to see too much evidence of the European settlers on this website?
Maybe some may read this and post some comments and memories?
