Thanks for sharing your photos. Our family was there between 56 and 58. Dad was Manager over at East Hills Hostel. your photo near the fence looks to be next door to the Hut we lived in, just across the road from the Child Minding Centre. My sister (Carol) and I were Teenagers. A lot of very good memories from the Rec Hall, Picture Night in the Dining room and dances at E.H. Camp. My friends were Peter Perkins, Tom McQue, Johnny McCreana, Lucy Ried, Rosy Aldridge, Pam Kirk, Janet and Carol Andrews, Pat Hurd and Irene Cross. Ring any bells to anybody ?? Very Happy

It's great to see some photos of Heathcote. I was in hut 64B 1962-64.My family name was Derry and I had two brothers Charlie and Ray. We lived next to the Manager's huts and I remember Mr Bell and Mr Bayeto. Our next door neighbours were Irish and they had four sons. When their fourth son was born my mother made a comment to them that this was their first little Australian. Back came the retort that if he had been born in China that would not make him Chinese, therefore he was Irish Exclamation

Very Happy Hi Norm, I remember most of the names you have mentioned. Also I was friends with Lucy Reid, Janet and Carol Andrews. All three of these returned to the UK. My family, Eileen & Eugene Doherty (Parents) Jim, Anna and myself Betty lived at the Hostel from 1958 to 1960. Nice to read you post. Regards Liz Grygiel

Hi everyone !
My name is Jim Painter lived from what i remember in 35a with my brothers John, Gerald and my sister Christine.
My cousins Ron Geoff and Susan Painter also lived on the camp.
We loved our soccer and played for hearts . Remember the grey shirts with a red V on the front.
Favorite place on the camp was Bert's shop!
We spent a lot of time at what we called the crystal a swimming hole in the bush or a hitchhike to the Waranora Dam.
Looking back we did some crazy stuff! The school holiday wars between Heathcote and East Hills and the Navy Camp.
Memories mostly good with some bad. I think the young ones fared a lot better than the adults to be honest.
Our time was between 1958 - 1961. Anyone around then would be good to hear.

Hi Jim. We were on Heathcote 1962/63 in hut 64B which was next to the Cirius Rd. I well remember Bert's shop and the wars between Heathcote/East Hills with both sides throwing stones at each other! I was not allowed to swim in the creek because my mother was worried that I would swallow some stagnant water and get sick but I used to sneak over there anyway. Mum always knew though because she said I smelt and I had green slime in my hair from the stagnant water.
We moved to Christchurch in 1964 and still here in Waimairi Beach. Really love NZ and glad we moved here. Despite everything that has happened I still think Christchurch is a great place with the beach, forest, plenty of parks and green spaces
