Hello my name is Moira and when I was seven and a half years old (1959) my parents, Alfred and Elaine Cannon, and sisters Susan and Kathryn emigrated to Australia. We initially stayed at Broadmeadows, but moved to Altona Hostel six months later. I'd like to share some of the photos that my mother Elaine, who is now 87 and worked in the nursery at Altona, took whilst we were there...

My mother Elaine Cannon and my sister Kathryn:

They're great photos, and the palm tree is still there.

Great photo's, and it's interesting to see that the units in 1959 were the same as the one's that we lived in when we came in 1963, not nissen huts as previously stated, unless they changed between 56 and 59, which I guess is possible, yet no other hostel in Vic changed.

yes and interesting too that the couch /divan was exactly the same as the ones that were there when we were there as well, the old place didnt change much until its massive makeover when thay got rid of all the asbestos ridden units and built the brick ones..( getting rid of all the evidence ).
Great photos though bring back even more memories, that palm tree has certainly stood the test of time though, it still stands, and hopefully they will leave it t here, you can see it as soon as you enter the now "Techno Park" what a god aweful name !!!

We could always apply to have it classified...Bruce says you can have it listed as a Significant Tree.

Sounds like a good idea Judith. Are you going to set that in motion?

Hi, your pics are really great. They took me back to when my family and I lived at the hostel, as the others mentioned, nothing much changed over the years. I loved the hostel as I was a ten year old boy and loved the meals.Regards Cool Cool Cool
