For those of you who went to old Port Kembla primary school, near the stack, it has been destroyed by an arsonist a few weeks ago and is to be demolished. It has been closed since 1998 (it was deemed unsafe for children to attend a school that close to the stack - shame about all the rest of us who attended that school and had to breathe in toxic fumes etc).

I know a lot of the kids who lived at the Fairy Meadow/Balgownie hostels attended Port Kembla school - many were my friends (even though I did not myself live at the hostels).

Also, the stack no longer operates and may be pulled down.

Between noxious fumes, industrial waste, cigarette-smoking parents, fat-fried food, leaded petrol and asbestos schools, we were certainly a generation of kids who lived life recklessly, taking it all in our stride.

Hi Glenda, thanks for the heads-up about the school. I attended Port Kembla public school for a couple of years back in 1967/69, we were at the Unanderra hostel site at the time and I have some good childhood memories of the school. Its a shame that it had to go that way as it had been there for many years.
