Hi Everyone. I am new to this forum, and new to tracing back our journey to Australa. We came out from the UK on the Fairsky, leaving Southhampton I think on boxing day 1964 arriving in Melbourne late in January. We then travelled on to Adelaide and stayed at a hostel in a Nissen hut, probably in Elder Park, although my mum is now too old to remember detail and I was only 8 so I only have vague memories of that time. I'd really like to hear from anyone who was on the ship and/or went to Adelaide so that I can find out a bit more about that particular hostel - I can't see any real reference to it on this forum. Looking forward to hearing from someone.
Sue

Hi Sue, we were on the same voyage, leaving Southampton on the Fairsky, Boxing Day 1964.
We were one of the last ships to sail through the Suez before the sea lane closed because of the aggression. However we didn't sail down the canal, we took advantage of the day trip, disembarking at Port Said, and traveling overland to Aden. I remember having to leave the dock by tug boat to re-embark because the water was too shallow for the ship to dock, we had almost reached the ship when an almighty bang shook us. We later heard that someone had bombed the police station.
We didn't go to Adelaide though, our destination was Melbourne, but, mid voyage somehow we were re-directed to Sydney.
I was fifteen at the time, so we wouldn't have known each other on the ship, but you may have known the O'Rielly family, they had younger children. A widow in her 40s emigrated with six children, how brave was that? Imelda was the little girl, one of the younger boys I think was James.

Hi GinaKate, thanks for getting back. I do recall some things that happened on the ship - I have some recollection of going through the Suez, mum has a ceramic Arab head so I am wondering if we went ashore as well, in Aden I think. I can't really recall any families we got to meet on the ship, except the Applebys or Appletons. I recall they moved to Whyalla at the same time as we did just after arriving in Adelaide, as my dad has a job at BHP that had already been arranged while we were still in the UK. I live in Melbourne now but I have just found a book in an Adelaide bookshop about the 'ten pound poms', which I have ordered - should be an interesting read

You probably did go ashore at Aden, everyone was always excited coming in to port and anxious to walk on dry land, especially in a foreign country.
Richard has put the video 'ten pound poms' in the other web link section, have you noticed that?
