I think that these days to be a migrant you have to have skills that are needed here eg. doctor , nurse , alluminium welder . You can come if you have a pile of money to invest in setting up a business.

Low skilled types of migrants they draw from refugees if they meet the critera and arn't just coming because the grass is greener.

Our type of migration has long gone Len.

Hi Roy

It?s just that I received an email asking me where new migrants stayed these day as their family was moving over to Sydney in August. I suppose there are plenty of places where the new arrivals can stay.
They asked if I could suggest any web sites they could visit to see about accommodation but I had to say sorry I can?t.

Oh?well. :)

From www.wikipedia.org/wiki/migrant_resource_centre

""Migrant Resource Centre
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A Migrant Resource Centre or MRC is a community-based organisation that provides settlement services for migrants and refugees. The main purpose of MRCs is to cater to the immediate and longer term needs of migrants and refugees to facilitate successful integration into their local community and enable them to reach their full potential. MRC's provide information and referral services and assistance with finding and keeping employment to newly arrived migrants and refugees. MRCs also provide services for aged and disabled members of ethnic communities who prefer to access ethno-specific services. Many MRCs also conduct research and consultancy on a range of cultural and community issues.

MRCs are limited by the terms of their funding and can only provide services to holders of certain categories of visa that allow them to access their services. Most asylum seekers are ineligible to access these services, along with most other government health, housing, community or employment services. There are a small number of specialist asylum seeker services that have been set up to cater to the needs of these highly marginalised people.

Multiculturalism ""

Most new migrants I encounter seem to be from Asia and Africa. There is an organisation here in the Illawarra called SCARF [South Coast African Refugees ] which helps black African refugees mostly from Barundi [French speaking] and the Congo.
There are numerous NGO's helping migrants, as well as government departments.
As assimilation was dropped in favour of 'multi culturalism' [whatever that might mean] and English language was not mandatory, we have a situation where there are thousands of people with little English language skills or comprehension though they have lived here for 40 and 50 years.
Problems arise in medical facilities and hospitals where they need translaters just to impart their symptoms. I have seen problems in hospital wards where interpreters are not readily available and the need for comprehension is urgent.
Regrettably the situation is repeating itself with non-english speaking migrants since and now.
