Hello,
I'm new to this wonderful forum and stumbled upon it by chance when looking up information for a university assignment. I am a student of Wollongong University and doing a research project for part of the Migration Heritage Project as part of my studies. I have chosen migrant accommodation as my topic and require people who were residents at any of the three hostels for recorded interviews about their experiences. There are some amazing stories that come from there, and I have a rather personal interest as well as an academic one, as my grandmother and grandfather were German and Polish migrants who stayed at Fairy Meadow hostel in the early '50's.
Your help, if you are able, would be greatly appreciated.

Hi I am David Draper(born David Joseph Worboys and I arrived on Balgownie in September 1954. I worked on the Railway Station there (now Fairymeadows) but then called Balgownie and I think a another teenager who came to work there with me was a Polish German, name of Manfred Jankowski. Tell me what you need to know about the hostel and it's lifestyle. One thing about the place was the beautiful golden sands of the beach, before the highway cut off access to it, years later and there was also the splendour of the mountains beyond. Most weekends would find the hostel residents on the beach, everyone knew everyone else and it's luxury was all for free.
Regards, David.
