Thanks for the link Gilly.
Ive been on the National Archives of Australia site before and never really got anywhere. Im sure its easy to navigate/ use but I found it a bit complicated and way over my head - but Im sure many others will be able to work it out and search without problems.
Cheers

Hi Len
I agree, the site isn't that easy to use, and gillysme's link didn't work for me - links to search results don't seem to last.
However, I've discovered that if you know where to look there are over 1,000 hostel images on the site. I've tried to show the process step by step.
1. Go the website www.naa.gov.au
2. Click the link PhotoSearch, top right hand corner.
3.Click the Search link in the middle of the screen.
4. Type A12111 in the search field, and select as "Series No." from the drop down on the right
5. That search will return 2000 results of over 10,000 images on the site to do with immigration.
6. Click "Refine Search", and type "hostels" (without quotes) into the search text. This will return over 1,000 hostel images. If you type in "hostel" (singular), you get over 500 more images.
Happy hunting
Cheers

Thanks for the heads-up Chris. I've had a good look now, thanks to your help.
I'll insert a link that will hopefully take everyone to the Hostels search page.
Hostels search page
You can also type in specific Hostel locations into the "REFINE SEARCH" option.

Hi Len and Leigh,
I have looked through all the 1,000 photos now .Many of them are of government holding centres especially Bonegilla but there are lots
of CHL ones too.Even found a photo of my late husband in there,at East Hills so that was good.
Thanks for the link .Leigh's instructions made it easy. _________________ Kind regards,

Hello Len
Just like Gilly's, your link didn't work for me. It seems that on that site links to search results expire after the original user session. Or is it just me? Anyhow, that's why I thought it best to spell out the steps.
All the best

Yes, youre right Chris. The link doesnt work for me neither but it did when I tried it at first. Perhaps my session had expired.
I will certainly be referring to your instructions again at some point. Thank you for posting them.

hi Len,
My first one expired and I had to wait and start from the beginning again.
I had put the link into favourites and that one wouldn't work so started from scratch again and sailed in.

Hi all,
I've been searching NAA too and there's a new way you can look at some of their photos related to migration. They've created a 'Destination Australia' website: https://www.destinationaustralia.gov.au/
If you put 'hostel' in the search field there are 1511 photos - I'm still wading through them!
Also, if you're interested in South Australian hostels, the Migration Museum (where I work) has created a Flickr group to share photos: http://www.flickr.com/groups/migranthostels/pool/with/5423707629/#photo_5423707629
Happy searching!
