This is the ship that took our family to the Australia in June 1967 and back to the uk in October 1973.
Anyone else travel on the Australis?

On the 18th January 1994 the ship went aground off the west coast of the island of Fuerteventura, Canary islands.

Find out more about the history of the SS Australis and view many images of the wreck by clicking the link below. Dont forget to look for the update page because thats were you'll find most of the images.

I originally migrated to Australia in 1963 aboard the Sitmar Lines Fairsky, and had such fond memories of the voyage that when I spent a year back in England I decided to return to Australia by ship. This time I travelled aboard the Chandris ship Australis.

I travelled from Southamton, England to Melbourne, Australia in October/November 1976. I remember having hot and hot (yes, that is correct) running water in my shower, so couldn't have a shower in my cabin for a couple of days until it was fixed. The food was good, and very plentiful.......I put on 7 pounds during the voyage. The entertainment in those days was mainly done by the passengers, with few if any paid entertainers on board. We got together and produced and put on a play which was great fun. There was a kids club so us adults had plenty of time to soak up the sun and atmosphere.

Having had 2 great journeys, my love of the sea and cruising has remained with me.

Yes me too,I wish I could make that journey again,I would do it in a heart beat, when we were on the Australis I was in the production of Hair, we had a ball doing that, and then some nutter who was high as a kite on drugs, nearly fell over board thinking she could fly.
