Would Elizabeth be the daughter as Mrs Brownley was named May and they moved to Altona from the Hostel. We visited them a couple of times.

Elizabeth was a little girl. I have found a Mary and Robert Brownlie in Maidstone Street, Altona in the 1972 Altona Electoral Roll.

Janet shaw reminded me of who the large family were who always ate every meal together it was the Bradys, they all had bowl haircuts and were quite weird looking, they were strict Catholics. And I don't thing they smoked or drank. The family just got bigger and bigger, anyone else remember them

Does anyone remember a family named Fairbairn? Kids were Shelagh and Rob. Arrived on the hostel in Feb '61 and left in Dec '63.

Just making sure everyone got to see this post. I have known Shelagh for many years and she is involved in most of the Gillet parties etc, yet I never knew till the weekend that she had also been on the hostel.

Gee I wish my mum was still alive, all these names I remember her talking about all the time as she worked in the hostel a long time after we left, Lotty Gilpin, May Brownlea, and the Scanlans who had lots of little kids, too young for us, in fact I think Lotty Scanlan had ne while we were still on the hostel, lots of boys and one little girl. I used to babysit for some of the hostel people when they moved out and up to Wimpy estate as we called it back then.

Mus was so proud we were in Nordenne estate because our house was brick, and not wooden, and she put so much prestige in that, also kept saying, "we dont have a second morgage and some of them do, like wee Mrs Wilson", how funny is that. The poor Wilsons are all gone now, wee Margaret as mum called her died quite young, and young David has gone now with cancer, my brother Richard was close to him till the end and went to his funeral in Williamstown. We used to call him wee David Wilson

I can't believe David Wilson is gone, I still see him as a teenager, they lived down the street from us in Brook Drive. Mrs. Wilson and my Ma were both in Peter McCallum's the same time having chemo about 1980.

Mum also had the same outlook with brick houses vs,. wooden houses, it was a real prestige in those days- now it's the opposite.

Lottie Gilpin I believe is still alive, with a bit of Alzheimer's, but Mr.Gilpin died last year.

Hi there Carol nice to see you onboard this site. Remember me Andy Logan, lived in B5 near the canteen, and I remember another family that went back like you did after 2 years it was the Hewitts. Brenda stands out with me coz she had long blonde hair and we went to Station Pier to see her off. The hostel was short on toilet paper that week as we used the rolls as steamers when the ship pulled away. Cheers for now.
