I remember ice-lollies -icy-poles - called brown bombers that tasted rather bitter, possibly anisees. There were blue peters, milky-flavoured yet coloured a vivid blue, and also white icy-poles, but I've forgotten their name, possibly because I was violently sick after eating one, and they put me off ice-lollies for years.
Not long after we arrived at Holmesglen in 1958, my mother asked for a choc-ice in the hostel shop, and then had to explain that she wanted ice cream with chocolate around the outside.
I'm sure the hostel shop must have sold other things, but I only recall ice cream, icy-poles, lemonade, lollies that it took me ages to stop calling sweets, and biscuits that were kept in big tins on a high shelf. |

My Dad used to bring home those bikkie tins from work, the bikkies were broken rejects but we thought it was great. Did our playlunches for weeks. |
