Hi Claus
Welcome and glad you remember my husband ,Tony Hobbs, though he wasn't a cook, he was the Manager in charge of East Hills.Yes I had three sons Murray, Charlie and Allan. Murray was would have been 15 yrs then and the twins 13 years. Did you know them? John was the "Skip".
How long were you on East Hills Hostel?
Hope you enjoy this site ,given to us to enjoy, by Len and you may be tempted to post some of your memories. Very Happy

Hi Again..
Phyl i was there for 4 month only...
phyl i know that Mr. hobbs was camp leader and got to know
him when he and 2 social workers came to my mother to
tell her That i had to go to scool but mother dident know how to find
me a school
but to tell you the truth we were so poor that i would
visit my freind Curt often just to go to the cantine and eat and
to get one of the brown bags the next morning Rolling Eyes
so i think it wasent that bad food as i read in one of the letters here. Laughing
phyl the reason for me to ask about your son is that Curt and i
borrowed a Phillips radio construction set of one of your sons and
i broke one of the transistors i feel bad about it even today.
so i was hoping that one of your sons remember curt and know anything
about where he is

Hi Claus, welcome to our forums. Im glad you made it.

I used to have a coupe of those electronic kits, they were great. You could construct allsorts of wonderful things. You could construct either one or two transistor radios or even a crystal radio, using a diode etc. I also loved all the different sound generators you could make, not to mention the Morse oscillator. dah di da dit__ dah dah di dah Mr. Green

As you say though, the transistors never seemed to last very long in those kits and thats probably because of. wiring them up wrong. Mr. Green

Funny thing is, in reality, the transistors in the kits werent really all that expensive to replace (just a few cents). I wish I had known that at the time, instead of throwing my kits away. Sad

Hi len..
I think your memory is cheating a little I remember having to
pay the boy 2AU$ so he could buy a new and that was alot
of money for my father at that time..
Remember that i had to"steal" food in the cantine when we moved away
to live in Belmore(3/8 lucernestreet)..
but i have many nice memories from easthills hostel
len are you involved in electronic both hobby or work..
I am a radio amatuer and have always played with electronic and remember i went to a electronic store in redfern where i made freinds
whit the owner who at that time was ripping old goverment computers aparet and he gave me 100's of diodes and transistors on small boards..
i also remember having to pay 10cent for a return ticket Laughing
and to phyl if i am not wrong i think i borrowed the radio kit from the twins and belive it was their Xmas present..

last night i found the pictures somone send here where easthills hostel
was all gone it made me cry for real it smashed all my dreams of geting back one day cry
all the best From Claus

Hi Claus

I was more thinking about replacing the actual broken transistor rather than replacing the whole electronics kit but alas, I had gone and thrown my kit away aswell, Anyways, I ended up with a better one, next birthday etc. I was about 13 or 14 and my parents both had jobs. My father worked at the Port Kembla steel works and my mother had a part time job in Wollongong.

For a living, I cut, bend and weld sheet metal. Im a sheet metal worker. I was never very good at school. Mr. Green
I did have an interest in electronics, as an hobby and I took the A.R.E. back in 1982 and have held my Amateur Radio licence ever since. My callsign is G6PXX.

Hi Claus,
Are you sure the transitor belonged to my son as I don't remember them ever having one. I will have to ask Charlie.Sadly Allan died 11 years ago cry cry . I think I spent Christmas of 1969 in NZ with my mother and siblings so can't remember what the boys got that year.Don't worry about it.Charlie loaned me an aluminium ladder and it fell and broke. It took me a while to tell him because I was upset about it and when I told him he couldn't even remember it Surprised Rolling Eyes
Charlie's business is on the net and you can see it at www.mtcook.com
if you would like to see what he's like today
I think Claus you had a hard time with having to visit your friend so you could eat in the canteen. Sad

To Len and Claus

My brother is also very interested in electronics you know Len the one who took the photo of the Australis.Anyway he is also a registered radio ham and his call sign is ZL 3TCY. He doesn't go on much these days ,to much a computer whiz. Smile

Hi Claus,
Have just spoken to Charlie today and he doesn't remember you or Curt ,sorry and said he didn't ever have a transistor radio only a crystal set . He can't remember anything ever happening to it.So maybe the one you are talking about belonged to someone else. He said don't think about it. So sorry he can't help you with your friend but someone may come onto the site who can. Smile

Hi Claus. Welcome to the forum. I was the one who went on a little "pilgrimage" last year to the old site. All of the buildings are gone now and have been for some time. Nature has taken over most of the area. However, you can still clearly see the layout of the old site. The concrete pads for the Nissens are still there, the central oval is still there and you can clearly see the remains of the canteen and rec hall. The roads are still there as well. If you can make it to the site, that would be good, as its only a matter of time before that land is sold of for more home development. When I was up there last April, there was developers already begining to carve up the area up towards where the old bridge used to be. There is a new one there now. As you look at the bridge, the area to the left was used for dumping (although you werent supposed to) and its now being developed for more houses. Kindest Regards, Richard.

Claus, did you attend East Hills Boys High? Hi Phyl, did your boys attend East Hills Boys High? I attended '67-'71. I was born in 1954 and by my reckoning so did your twins but I don't recall there being Hobbs twins when I was there.
