I have become addicted to this website, I do nothing all day but go from facebook to Migrant website, my poor dog is waiting patiently for his walk and as we are in a High Rise Apartment he definaely has to have one but he will have to waite because I am on here, also the dishes are pileing up in the sink and the ironing should be getting done, but none of this is happening as I am on here, I think this is going to lead to a divorce but never mind I have the reunion to look forward to, must start that diet and maybe see a plastic surgeon see if they can put things back where they used to be, maybe standing on my head for the next few months, oH no I cant work the computer upside down so there goes that idea _________________ If its to be its up to me |

You can lose two hours without even trying, between this place and Facebook. I'm also on a Belfast forum. |

Nah..sod the ironing,we have too much to talk about,we have 40 odd years to catch up on,how much ironing have you done in that time.I remember the ironing rooms on the hostel, they were only used as meeting places for us kids at night. |

I dont ever remember anyone doing any ironing in the ironigh room at all, and they were so big, they must have expected a lot of ironers at one time. We lived in the very first hut facing the creek up near the nursery, but we had lived in another one at one time when we first moved onto the hostel. I think our address was 1a. Could see everyone coming over the bridge from the beach and we were real nosy, wathced everyhone coming and going _________________ If its to be its up to me |

We spent a lot of times sitting on the tables that were meant to be used for ironing and folding clothes, and listening to our music. As you said, never actually saw anyone doing any ironing. I think my mum did hers in our flat, along with the washing once she got a machine. We converted one of the bedrooms into a dining/kitchen/laundry and another into a sitting room and bought a proper settee. The actual living room became a large bedroom. Would have loved to see what the new units were like inside when they renovated the hostel. _________________ Resident of Altona Hostel, 1963-1965 |

Well they were luxury on the outside, compared to what we had.
We all agreed on our recent visit, that we would never have left! Inside toilets even. |

Yer,and a balcony outside what looks like the main bedroom
( even that would have been a joy)the main bedroom I mean not the balcony
I dont recall and this may be a daft question, but, was there any BBQ facilities on the hostel,I can't remember there ever being, but there may have been and we never used them, come to think of it I don't recall us ever having a BBQ at home either, maybe my Mum did'nt like them.I know we used to have them if we went to Geelong or Lara where there were BBQ areas, but my Dad always did the cooking. _________________ Carol Myers Altona Hostel Dec 1962 - June 1964 |

No, I'm pretty sure there weren't any BBQ facilites at the hostel. I'm thinking back now and seeing the hostel as it was, and no, there were certainly no BBQ's. I think if anyone ever did any BBQing it would have been on their own portable BBQ, though I don't ever remember seeing anyone do that either.
Sausage sizzles weren't the big thing that they are today, and there was never the smell of onions and snags as far as remember. So sad.
I do remember the hot cocoa that we were given in the winter months, usually after we got home from school. _________________ Resident of Altona Hostel, 1963-1965 |

Just letting y'all know, I'll be a bit sporadic for the next few weeks.
I'm going to Belfast on Saturday to see the rellies for a few weeks, back on November 5. I'll bring the little laptop, but will be depending on whatever wi-fi there is.
Carol, tragic news- two weeks till the Torchwood convention, and John Barrowman has cancelled!
I'M IN AGONY!!!!!!!!!!! |

Damn, and he's such a hunk. Loved Torchwood, pity it had such a short run.
Have a great trip Judith. _________________ Resident of Altona Hostel, 1963-1965 |

Nah, thanks but no thanks... I want him in one piece!
Apparently he's snowed under doing a theatre production.
Will just have to content myself with Ianto and James Marsters but it won't be the same. Still, I'm lucky to be going at all. |
