Here are a few images that I got off Google earth. The first one is of how the Unanderra Hostel site looks now 'within a couple of years that is'.
The second one is the same as the first apart from I've added an overlay showing where Unanderra hostel was once situated.
I know the hostel was there because of an electrical pylon which is located at this side of Five islands road. It was also situated between the industrial buildings Stuart and Lloyds and the hostel site.
You may think an electrical pylon is an unusual thing to remember but the reason why I remember was because back in 1968-69 we watched them erect it. You cant see the pylon on these images but if you down load and install Google Earth you can zoom in and just about make it out.
If I remember correctly, somewhere near at the base of the pylon was a 5ft diameter drain pipe. I know this, because as kids we walked into it with torches etc it ran under five islands road and then turned 90 towards Unanderra.

Google earth is brilliant. These are just a sample of what you can view in and around the Illawarra; you can zoom in even closer. I would recommend it to anyone provided theyve got broadband. Best of all, its free and for just a few dollars you can upgrade to google earth plus and have GPS, showing all the street names etc.
