My name is Jeanette I arrived in Australia with my 2 sisters Anita and Lesley, my Mum and Dad from the UK on 31 October 1970 on a scorching hot summers day to be placed into an old army hut which although an adventure for us kids was a bit of shell shock for our mum and dad. On arrival we received the standard grey army blanket each, 1 pyrex mug and a knife fork and spoon to be greeted by the burly Matron who walked us to our "New Home". I remember the discos held in the "Rec" by Skipp and coming outside afterwards to be barraged with huge Christmas Beetles. I have tried to find a few friends I made on the hostel one being Mandy Pleshek from UK who I would wag school with and go down to North Gong Beach to pick winkles off the rocks. I also knew John Luis (no surname) from Yugoslavia, if anyone knows the whereabouts of these people particularly John Luis I would appreciate your letting me know. John Luis was often found in the Rec room doing a gymnastic performance he was also a very good artist we often hung around together at the Hostel playground with other Yugoslav boys and girls. I was 14 years at the time John was 21, I do hope someone can help me find him. _________________ 1970 Fairy Meadow Hostel Migrant from UK |
