Hi everyone, while I am interested to read everyones stories I was just wondering how many members actually travelled here on the same ships, we came on the Straithhaird which amongst other claims to fame carried Sir Donald and his invincibles cricket team..anyone else come on that ship? We docked in Melb in June 1956 after coming on the 10 pound pom scheme...

Our family travelled too and from Australia on the SS Australis. The ship later became the American star and while being towed to another location, it became a drifted and ended up as a ship wreck of the coast of Fuerteventura.

There�s an excellent website about it�s history and some really interesting photos of the wreck.

Came on the old hulk SS Largs Bay - built in Scotland back in about 1928 and we arrived in 1952. It only made one more trip before being scrapped. It was a troop ship during WW2. My mother left a jacket onboard when we disembarked by miustake. When it came back in 1953 she made contact and got it back - it was still being kept onboard.

total 10 weeks cruising -around the world

Hi All,
I came from NZ to Australia on the " S.S. Monowai " Only three days but I was sick all the time I was below deck, eeks it was awful Sad

I was okay on deck and ate like a horse. Thank goodness my 8 month old son wasn't sick. Rolling Eyes

in answer to your question , why did i go home ? i obviously didnt have a choice in the matter as a ten year old, but usual story with most immigrants- homesick, this tended to affect the women more than the men and my mum was terribly home sick, me as a ten year old absolutly (should be an e in there somewhere) loved it ,

my uncle also immigrated at a similar time to us,set up a succesful busines for five years, came back to england for five years and returned to oz, in the end not being sure where his prefferd home was....

I returned to England for a working holiday in 1970 on the Angelina Lauro.

It was a hell ship I can tell you.

Fights , stabbings etc.

The only good thing was the pizza parlour at the stern of the prom deck but it was directly opposite the card room where all the trouble originated.

The prom deck urinal was blocked for the whole voyage , it was ankle deep and the stench was everywhere including the cinema.

We sailed on the SS Maloja, it was its last voyage. I think it was an Italian ship. We sailed from England (after catching the train from Inverness in Scotland), in 1951 and I remember I had my eighth birthday crossing the Red Sea in October. Mum and I were quite ill for the first few days and only ate dry cracker biscuits.

I�m sure Ken Ionside, the owner of the SS Australis homepage would appreciate this image on his site and I believe that you have already passed it on.

The SS Australis had made her last voyage to Sydney in November 1977 'after losing the government contract'. She was laid up at an anchorage at Timaru, New Zealand while her fate was decided.
In 1978 she was bought by some American investors and sailed to New York. She was renamed the America.
