Unanderra Hostel Memories
We left the hostel in 1970 to moved to Denise Street, Lake Heights, Warrawong.
All us kids attended Lake Heights Public School. I then moved on to Berkeley High School and finished off at Warrawong High.
My father continued to work at the steelworks whilst my mother had a part time job working at the Golden Rose Restaurant, King Street, Wollongong and then at the Koala Coffee Lounge, King Street, Wollongong.
We all moved back to the UK in October 1973 and mum and dad are now retired, spending time on their allotment growing vegetables and keeping chickens.
My brother Shaun works at the local brewery, Whitbread's and is now married with two children and my sister is also married with one child.
We also had a relative who moved to Australia just after we did. He was my father's brother,Terence Dempsey who moved to Spring wood, Logan, Queensland and set up a successful joinery business. Regrettably he died suddenly from a brain haemorrhage in 1989-90 leaving his widowed wife Hilary who he had only recently married. Just months later sadly, Hilary also died after a battle with cancer.

Our family emigrated to Australia in April 1967 from the UK on a £10 ticket. We sailed on the SS Australis from Southampton. I was 9 years old at the time, my brother Shaun was 8 years and my sister Elaine was just 1 year old. My father Len Dempsey had a job lined up at Port Kembla (AIS) Steelworks where he was a moulder.
When we first arrived in Australia we stayed at Unanderra Hostel. and lived on E Block.
My mother Mary worked at the hostel in the canteen until we moved on. We stayed there for two and a half years in total and my brother and myself went to Port Kembla Public School.
Whilst there we also joined the Berkeley Judo Club and the Berkeley East soccer Club.
