The Berkeley Judo Club was founded by Henry Lewiston at the Berkeley hostel site. For a short time the Club was in the now empty canteen as the Berkeley hostel had been closed for some time. They used old mattresses on the floor with a canvas sheet over the top as the judo mat. Later on the club moved into the centre of Berkeley into an empty shop with brand new judo mats.
